Two months on since the opening of Saudi markets, foreign investment into the region remains low. Charles Gubert examines why foreign investors may be holding back on the region, and what needs to take place in order to make the region a more desirable investment option.

Active management is under siege from many corners, including passive investment advocates, robo-advisers, academics, and individual investors. The narrative, of course, is that active managers add no alpha after fees. Is active management dead? Hardly. But active management is certainly wounded. And many of these alpha wounds are self-inflicted.

National Private Placement Regimes (NPPR) could remain in place until 2020 following the announcement by the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) that only Switzerland, Jersey and Guernsey would presently be able to access the pan-EU marketing and distribution passport afforded under the Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive (AIFMD).

South Africa remains Africa’s pre-eminent hedge fund jurisdiction with Assets under Management (AuM) now standing at R61 billion ($5.1 billion) at year-end 2014, as the industry continues to grow, delegates at Fund Forum Africa in London were told.

After the financial crisis of 1997, the Asian and emerging markets materially outperformed the United States. However, since 2010, Asia Pacific ex-Japan has underperformed the US market by around 70%. The reasons for the de-rating of Asian markets over the past five years are threefold. Firstly, the relative growth differential between Asia and emerging markets and the developed world narrowed, contrary to consensus; secondly, relative profitability (returns) deteriorated; and, thirdly, the valuation starting point for Asia and emerging markets was expensive in 2010.

The Stalking Horse couldn’t help but notice that fund managers really have been feeling the stick this month. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), asset managers are a risk to the global financial stability and regulators need to keep a closer eye on them. Sounds a bit harsh, but where is the IMF coming from?

It is party season for exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and the Stalking Horse of Monaco is in a celebratory mood. UK ETFs marked their 15th birthday last month and on the near horizon is the 25th anniversary of the creation of the global industry. What a 15 years it has been for ETFs in the UK.  The sector has grown from a £3.9bn turnover in 2004 to £185.8bn turnover in 2014, according to figures from the London Stock Exchange.

When I spoke at FundForum Asia this April, I looked at the opportunities for funds around digital disruption. It's an area in which the very word "opportunities" has to be heavily qualified, given how great the threats and challenges are. I have picked out three areas in which understanding digital trends promises great rewards - if acted upon sufficiently boldly.

Take a look at our collection of Social Media stories that took place at the event to see what the hot topics were at FundForum Asia 2015. #FFAsia15
